About the Position:
This is the first level of the customer service series. Incumbents perform customer service in person and by telephone, data entry, and processing work in utilities. Additionally, incumbents will file records and documents, take payments and monies and account for customer/City funds, maintain related records and accounts, perform research on documents and customer questions, and maintain supplies and forms. Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are a valuable asset for this position.  Successful candidates will demonstrate strong communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing excellent service to the community.  Join our team and help create a service-focused workplace built on excellence and strong customer relationships!

About the Customer Service Division:

Customer Service is a division of the City of Grand Junction's Utilities Department. It is responsible for managing and administering the billing and collection of utilities, including water, sewer, trash, recycling, and irrigation services, for residents and businesses within the city limits and the 201 Persigo area. In addition to billing and collections, Customer Service is responsible for establishing and maintaining utility accounts, issuing service orders for new connections and disconnections, and responding to customer inquiries and concerns related to utility services. The department's team is committed to providing high-quality customer service and ensuring the accuracy of billing and meter readings. Overall, the Grand Junction Customer Service division plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of the city's utility services and supporting the quality of life for its residents and businesses.

What You'll Do: 

  • Responsible for assisting with a variety of routine customer service and administrative support functions, including responding to general and specific inquiries from customers regarding regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Research and respond to inquiries and direct customers to the appropriate City divisions and departments.
  • Process and enter information on assigned databases and departmental software systems.
  • Complete work orders; perform appropriate tags and shut-offs to specific customer utility accounts.
  • Monitor and track delinquent utility accounts; calculate payment schedules and fees using established formulas. 
  • Collect and process a high volume of utility, departmental, and miscellaneous cash receipts.

What We're Looking For: 

  • One (1) year of general accounting and/or customer service experience.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Proficiency with 10-key adding machine.

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements maybe substituted.

About the Team

The Utilities Department ensures reliable water and wastewater services to protect public health and the environment. The department is divided into Water Services—which manages water supply, treatment, distribution, irrigation, and utility billing—and Wastewater Services, which oversees collection, treatment, industrial pretreatment, and environmental laboratory functions. The department maintains critical infrastructure, including reservoirs, treatment plants, pipelines, meters, and fire hydrants, to provide high-quality drinking water and effective wastewater management.
