Electrical/Mechanical Engineer III

Barn Owl Precision Agriculture

Job Description

Job Type: Full time, Salaried

Wage: $145,000-$170,000/yr.

Location: Florence, CO.

Job Description:

About Barn Owl Precision Ag (BOPA)

At BOPA, we’re building the future of autonomy for small and mid-sized farms. Our compact, intelligent robots (ANTs) perform precision agricultural tasks like weeding, planting, and nutrient management - helping farmers cut labor costs, reduce chemical use, and increase sustainability.

We are a Seed-stage startup with a nimble, farmer-focused team. Our goal is to design robust, scalable robotics systems that can be deployed across the globe.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a senior, hands-on electrical / mechanical engineer to lead the design, integration, and evolution of the hardware systems that make up our next generation of autonomous nano-tractors (ANTs).

This role owns critical parts of the physical platform end-to-end - from electrical architecture, power distribution, wiring, sensors, motors, and actuators through mechanical assemblies, structural components, implements, and system integration.

You’ll operate as a technical leader across electrical and mechanical engineering - driving design decisions that impact reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, and production readiness. You’ll lead complex hardware efforts, mentor other engineers, and help set the standard for how we design, build, test, and ship robust field robotics systems.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Systems & Integration

  • Own electrical architecture across power distribution, compute, sensors, actuators, and subsystems

  • Design wiring, harnessing, connectors, grounding, and protection for robust field operation

  • Size and integrate electrical components based on voltage, current, thermal, environmental, and requirements

  • Debug complex electrical and electromechanical failures across production and prototype systems

  • Design, review, and support development of custom PCBs for power, sensing, control, and system interface needs

Mechanical Design & Development

  • Own mechanical design of chassis components, assemblies, mounts, implements, and supporting systems against strength, weight, clearance, serviceability, environmental exposure, and real-world agricultural operation requirements

  • Develop and review CAD models, drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing documentation

  • Prototype and iterate mechanical designs based on lab and field testing

Testing & Validation

  • Lead structured root cause analysis of mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical failures

  • Develop test plans for structural loading, vibration, thermal performance, power consumption, ingress protection, durability, and component lifecycle

  • Define acceptance criteria and validation requirements for new components and design changes

Systems Architecture & Production Readiness

  • Drive hardware architecture decisions across electrical and mechanical subsystems

  • Define interfaces between mechanical, electrical, compute, and robotics systems

  • Design systems for manufacturability, assembly, maintenance, and field serviceability

  • Partner with manufacturing and suppliers on component sourcing, production processes, quality, and scaling

Technical Leadership

  • Mentor and guide engineers on system design, debugging, testing, and engineering best practices

  • Drive technical reviews and make pragmatic engineering trade-offs around cost, reliability, performance, and schedule

  • Set the standard for hardware engineering quality, docs, reliability, and execution across the platform

Success Metrics (First 12–18 Months)

  • Lead successful design and validation of electrical/mechanical systems for the next gen ANT platform

  • Improve platform reliability through resolution of hardware and electromechanical failure modes

  • Improve serviceability, durability, manufacturability, and field performance across ANT deployments

  • Reduce hardware complexity and improve component standardization where appropriate

  • Capture lessons from 2026 deployments and steer hardware improvements for future iterations

  • Support successful transition of new designs from prototype into repeatable production

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, robotics, automotive, industrial automation, or related systems

  • Strong fundamentals across electrical and mechanical engineering

  • Proven ownership of electromechanical systems from prototype through production deployment

  • Experience designing and integrating motors, actuators, sensors, power, and mechanical assemblies

  • Strong track record of diagnosing and resolving hardware and system-level failures

  • Experience with CAD and production mechanical design

  • Understanding of manufacturing methods, tolerancing, materials, fabrication, and assembly

  • Experience working with field robotics, vehicles, industrial equipment, or other ruggedized systems

Bonus Points

  • Background in autonomous vehicles, mobile robotics, agricultural machinery, or ruggedized systems

  • Familiarity with CAN, embedded controls, and ROS2-based robotics systems

  • Hands-on knowledge of wiring harnesses, rugged electrical design, and environmental sealing

  • Working knowledge of structural analysis, FEA, vibration, fatigue, or thermal design

  • Exposure to production manufacturing processes and working with contract manufacturers or suppliers

Our Culture

At BOPA, we value practical impact, humility, and speed of iteration. We test everything in the field, learn fast, and build with farmers. We believe diverse perspectives lead to better designs, and we’re committed to fostering inclusion and collaboration.

Why Join Us

  • Mission-Driven Work: Build robots that transform farming and rural economies

  • High Ownership: Own all hardware decisions and roadmap

  • Fast Iteration: Design, build, and see your systems operating in real-world fields within weeks

  • Equity & Growth: Share in the company’s success at scale
