Job Type: Seasonal, Hourly

Wage: $21-$21.50/hr.

Location: Mesa, CO.

Job Description:

A Summer Trainee Patroller will learn the mountain and equipment functions of Patrol and help with providing effective care and transport of injured, sick, and lost guests. They will learn to patrol the mountain for our guests’ safety and biking enjoyment and maintain good public relations. The Trainee Patroller will require careful supervision and instruction on all assignments and will consistently follow all Powderhorn Mountain Resort policies and procedures, all applicable laws (federal, state, and local), and all health and sanitation codes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Learn to assist in maintaining Powderhorn Patrol Mountain Safety Standards. 
  • Learn to assist in the extrication, care, and transportation of traumatic and medical patients.
  • Have the ability to work and solve problems under pressure.
  • Capacity to work as part of a team in a cohesive unit.
    1. When at Patrol Headquarters be prepared to respond quickly to any incident on the mountain. *
  • Learn to perform morning trail checks, help to mark unmarked obstacles, adjust padding, put out signage. *
  • Carry out instructions from dispatcher, senior and master patrollers. *
  • Training as indicated by the Patrol Manager. *
  • Assist in general mountain safety work (tower pads, bamboo, rope, race closure, traffic control, etc.). *
  • Assist in patrolling special events, such as speed and technical racing.
  • Learn to fill out incident reports. *
  • Learn how to conduct an accident investigation.
  • Learn all the facets of Patrol safety education programs.
  • Maintain personal Bike equipment in good condition. *
  • While riding, a patroller will be under control and observe mountain safety rules as an example to the public. *
  • Maintain excellent guest services and standards including being informative, understanding, and tactful, but firm when education is needed. *
  • Perform trail sweep to close the mountain and clear all trails of the public, aiding as necessary. *
  • Assist in dispatching and all related activities.
  • Assist base patrol coordinator and learn all related activities.
  • Assist in search and rescue for lost guests, sometimes after hours.
  • Learn lift evacuation techniques. *
  • Completion of Trainee and Basic New Patroller training checklist. *
  • Report unsafe conditions regarding equipment and area of work, or elsewhere in the area.
  • Maintain Powderhorn cleanliness standards.
  • Willingness and Capability to function at any time during an assigned patrol shift as a Powderhorn Lift Operator as requested by Powderhorn Operations Management.
  • Perform other duties as directed by Patrol Management.

 

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Outdoor Emergency Care (120 hours) *
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer*

Experience:

  • Successful completion of Powderhorn Mountain Resort Patrol Assessment Clinic.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able and willing to perform all of the patrol job functions in any Powderhorn Resort terrain and in all conditions.  
  • Strong Mountain Bike rider, capable of riding at Powderhorn in any type of conditions, while in full control and at an emergency response pace. 
    1. Demonstrate willingness to continually train and improve their ability.
    2. Must be an Expert level Mountain biker capable of efficiently and safely riding all green and blue Powderhorn bike trails
    3. Must be able to efficiently and safely ride at least 90% of black and double black terrain while also able to quickly, efficiently, and safely walk with their bike for the remaining 10% of black/double-black bike trails
  • Complete all required pre-season and lift operations training

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

This position is four days per week and may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:

  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is outdoors with a high exposure level to seasonal weather, including cold, snow, wind, high sun exposure, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is high. Lifting a weight of 60 pounds throughout the day for routine tasks is common.
  • Strenuous physical activity may include lifting heavy loads and biking, walking, or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment,
  • Patrol work may require significant sustained cardiovascular output for a long duration.  To include multiple bouts of 30 minutes or more of strenuous extrication activity including moving of a loaded litter through precarious terrain in challenging unstable and off camber conditions, and through dense vegetation.   
  • Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting.  Ultraviolet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude.  Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting.  Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing and eye protection to be worn.
  • Helmets are worn at all times when skiing, snowboarding, biking, or driving snowmobiles/ATVs
